Fort Matanzas National Monument is one of two Spanish-era forts in the city of St. Augustine. The fort was built by the Spanish on the site of a 16th-century massacre in 1742, to protect the inlet of the Matanzas River, it is used as a rear entrance to the city of St. Augustine. Fort Matanzas National Monument was rating a United States National Monument on October 15, 1924.
